6 effective strategies to stop toxic coping
It is a universal truth that sometimes life is hard, and we all need a break and a way to release stress. Some people might look forward to a drink at the end of a hard journey or vaping break at work. Some others may have practiced our friend ‘procrastination’ to avoid that annoying task we dislike so much.It is a universal truth that sometimes life is hard, and we all need a break and a way to release stress. Some people might look forward to a drink at the end of a hard journey or vaping break at work. Some others may have practiced our friend ‘procrastination’ to avoid that annoying task we dislike so much.
Coping mechanisms are strategies or behaviours that we all use to manage stress, anxiety, or difficult emotions. They can be healthy such as seeking social support, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in physical activity. But they can also be toxic and unhealthy such as substance abuse, avoidance, self-harm, overworking or unhealthy self-criticism. Unhealthy coping mechanisms provide temporary relief and may look like a good way to deal with stress, however, they often lead to negative consequences and can worsen mental health outcomes.
Stopping the use of unhealthy coping mechanisms can be challenging but with the right support and strategies, it is possible to break free from these patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Here are six easy-to-follow strategies to stop unhealthy coping mechanisms:
Exercise – Regular exercise reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood, and increases overall feelings of well-being. Even a ten-minute walk makes a difference!
Develop a Self-Care Routine and make it a priority every day – Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in enjoyable hobbies help us to feel more energized, focused, and resilient in the face of stress.
Set Achievable Goals – By setting small, achievable goals, you can build confidence in your ability to cope with difficult situations and overcome challenges. Remember one step at a time is all it takes.
Connect With Nature – Spending time in nature improves overall well-being and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exposure to natural environments has been shown to reduce stress levels and improve mood.
Practice Gratitude and be positive – or in Monty Python’s wise words ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ Gratitude provides a sense of perspective and helps us recognize the good things in our lives, even during difficult times.
Celebrate Progress in good company – No matter how small, progress towards healthier coping mechanisms should be acknowledged and celebrated. Celebrations are always better with friends. Recognizing progress and celebrating successes will increase your resilience in the face of stress
