Are you connecting?
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that humans crave connection, and that connection is directly related to community. Feeling accepted provides not just validation but also self-worth and joy. Knowing that you are needed, and have a purpose, reminds you that you are valued and that life is meaningful.
Community is about belonging, finding the right support and purpose, and feeling engaged and energized by others. Then, how do I find community? Where do I start?
Start with reflecting on what’s important to you, because if you feel passionate about something, you will find it easier to connect with others who share that passion. Perhaps you enjoy cycling and could try joining a riding club at weekends. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to paint portraits, garden, or play D&D games so you could try joining a team.
Another very useful way to find the right community for you is to reflect on your values and beliefs. You could join a charity, a church group, or find volunteer work in your community. Being of service is rewarding, and you can connect with others who have similar values or care about the same causes as you. A big part of building your community is giving back, so volunteer work is a rewarding way to do it.
Where you find community is up to you; there is no one-size-fits-all. And if you haven’t found a strong sense of community yet, keep trying. No matter if your community is big or small, finding people you connect with is vital for your mental health.
