The Best Healthy Foods to Eat in the Summer

Like every month, at EOV Wellness Project® we like to bring you some practical wellness habits that will make a positive impact on your life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can feel like a challenge at times, especially when you’re already trying to balance everyday life.

When it comes to health and wellness, sometimes it’s the small and consistent changes that make the biggest impact. We are here to remind you that healthy eating choices can make your life better. Follow along with our simple healthy food choices tips for summer to see how you can make simple adjustments within your daily diet and achieve lasting effects:

Splashing some local, beautifully coloured, fresh produce onto our plates is a great way to serve some of that healthy food that our bodies need every day. There are plenty of choices but here in North America, summer is the season of fresh, local produce making it easy to find some of the best healthy foods to eat at your local farmers’ markets. From peaches, apricots, strawberries or pears to fresh peas, broccoli, tomatoes or leeks there are plenty of delicious foods to eat during the hottest season of the year.

Buying organic is also important, whenever possible. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, and contain fewer pesticides.

When temperature rises eat foods that help you stay cool. Fruits and vegetables are mostly water – Cucumber, tomatoes, watermelon, coconut water, green leafy vegetables, and melons probably come to mind when you think of cooling foods. But if you want to try something different, why not venture into cool soups like Gazpacho, Ajoblanco, Naengmyeon or Vichyssoise?

If you want something more consistent, you can’t go wrong with serving whole foods. Whole foods are packed with the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients the body needs for fun in the sun, and they make the base for many of the yummiest salads.

And finally, how about firing up the grill? Summer BBQs and grilling are typically associated with hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, and other animal proteins. But, it is possible to make healthy alternatives like veggie hamburgers, vegetable kebabs, roasted sweet potatoes and yams or grilled bananas or pineapple for dessert.
There are plenty of healthy choices in summer so remember as the thermometer rises beat the heat with healthy eats!
